You may have read in the Christmas Bulletin that we are hoping to restart Home Fellowship Groups using material produced by the Methodist Relief and Development Fund entitled “What does the Bible say about changing the world?” There are 6 sessions:

  • Fighting injustice
  • Living compassionately
  • Giving graciously
  • Seizing every opportunity
  • Working together
  • Walking in hope

If you would like to be involved in evening groups on Tuesdays or Thursdays please speak to Avis or Nina.  Ideally we would like to start the groups some time this month.

Church Community Worker   The post has recently been advertised.  This is a very important appointment in the life of Cannon Lane Church. Please pray for God’s guidance in choosing the right applicant and for his/her future work among us and our local community.

Flowers   Thank you to those who have already signed the 2010 flower list in the vestibule.  However, there are still plenty of spaces.

EMERGENCY APPEAL

We have received an appeal from Christian Aid for us to help victims of the Haiti earthquake.  They have already released £100,000 and will send more as soon as they can to provide relief and reconstruction on the ground.  There will be retiring collections this week and next, and anything that you can donate will be very much appreciated.

This afternoon at 3.30 pm Churches Together in Eastcote have a Tea Table Conference at Northwood Hills United Reform Church, Joel Street. There will be a short act of worship at 5.00 pm.

Dot Nott We are sorry to announce that Dot died on 20 January.  Her funeral will be at Love Lane on Thursday 28 January at 12.30 pm  followed by committal at Woodcock Hill cemetery.  Prior to the funeral, the Love Lane Thursday Coffee morning will take place between 10.00 and 12.00 noon in memory of Dot, and there will be refreshments at the Church at 3.00 pm

Monday 22 February – Sunday 7 March  Fairtrade Fortnight This year, to promote fairtrade, we are being encouraged to try a new fairtrade product in Fairtrade Fortnight – to take part in the Big Swap!  This means swapping something that isn’t fair trade for something that is and asking friends and family to do the same. You can register your commitment online at http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/thebigswap/getinvolved/ The website contains a big list of possible products, ranging from food, beauty products and clothes.   We will be having a Tradcraft stall after morning worship on Sunday 28 February.

Wednesday 24 February 2.30 pm  Speaker Meeting. As February is National Heart month, people are invited to bring anything heart shaped or heart related.

Monday 22 February – Sunday 7 March Fairtrade Fortnight  This year, to promote fairtrade, we are being encouraged to try a new fairtrade product in Fairtrade Fortnight – to take part in the Big Swap!  This means swapping something that isn’t fair trade for something that is and asking friends and family to do the same. You can register your commitment online at http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/thebigswap/getinvolved/ The website contains a big list of possible products, ranging from food, beauty products and clothes.   We will be having a Traidcraft stall after morning worship on Sunday 28 February.

The Coffee Shop has been open every Friday morning, from 10.15am-12noon at St. Luke’s Parish Centre for the last 8 years, providing a meeting place for friends to gather, or to meet new friends; an opportunity to exchange news between the churches; and it has made a significant financial contribution to the work of the PAC and to many different charities. Pinner Free Church are open for a prayer journey around their Church, stopping to reflect on the events of Holy Week.  The journey can take any time from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on what people want to do.  This is open to all, and there is no admission charge, although donations to their charity Mercy Ships will be gratefully received. Friday 2 April 3.30 pm The Passion of Jesus in Trafalgar Square.  The first ever performance of the Passion of Jesus will be acted out freely by over 100 experienced actors from the Wintershall Estate in Surrey where the annual event of the “Life of Christ” is performed to thousands, together with other plays such as the Wintershall Nativity and the Acts of the Apostles. The performance will be in biblical costume and the dialogue and music will be amplified throughout the square.  It is hoped that the play will bring the faith in Christ to those who don’t know him, remind those who do, and develop faith as the greatest gift mankind can have.

Thursday 22 April 8.00 pm  Annual Church Meeting. This is a very important meeting in the Church’s year when we look back over previous activities, make a number of appointments and, this year, will welcome Paul Kybird speaking about “Vision”.

London Marathon  25 April Nigel is running in aid of Kids Company which does great work with 14,000 children and young people in London who are amongst the most deprived and vulnerable. Monday 26 April 8.-10 pm North Harrow Methodist Church General Election Harrow West Public Forum, arranged by Churches Together in North Harrow. This is a chance to hear and question the candidates for Harrow West.  Everyone is welcome (including those of us no longer within the constituency as a result of boundary changes.)

Pinner Association of Churches General Election
It has not been possible for the PAC to organise a General Election meeting, but, as we are now part of the Ruislip/Northwood Constituency, contact has been made with the Northwood Churches.  Hillingdon Inter-Faith Group has arranged 3 election meetings to meet all the candidates.  There is one being held on MONDAY 26th APRIL at Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue, in Oaklands Gate, Northwood.  Doors open at 7.30pm and event starts at 8.00pm.

Wednesday 28 April 2.30 pm Wednesday Speaker Meeting will be having a musical afternoon led by Avis.

Friday 30 April 8.00 for 8.15 pm   Prayer and Praise led by Ian.

Church Community Worker   Interviews took place last week, and we hope to be able to announce the name of the successful candidate shortly.

Further Ahead

Christian Aid Week Collection  The Christian Aid Week house to house collection takes place between 9 and 15 May.  The focus this year is on CA’s work with communities in Kenya to secure safe water supplies. We are looking for volunteers to put envelopes through doors in the roads in the Cannon Lane area and to call back to collect them later in the week. If you are able to help please contact Ian or Katherine Pickering (8863 1941).  During Christian Aid Week there will also be collections outside Marks and Spencer in Pinner. If you are able to help in this way, please contact Rosemary Mortimer of Love Lane Methodist Church (8428 4351) who is co-ordinating for the Pinner Association of Churches.

Saturday 15 May  Elaine Duxbury is organising a Coffee and Cake Break in aid of Multiple Sclerosis. Please put the date in your diary now.

Book Aid   Christine Macqueen is again requesting that the churches collect any second hand Bibles for Book aid to be sent overseas. Other Christian books are also welcome.  Any Bibles collected should be delivered to Christine at 6B Field End Road, Pinner, Middx HA5 2QL, between Saturday 8 and Tuesday 11 May or left at the Church by Sunday 10 May, to enable Revd Mike Hall to take them to the Christian Resources Exhibition.    If you have any queries please contact Christine on 020 8868 0567.

Church Community Worker  We are pleased to announce that Lee Scott, currently a youth worker in the Northolt area, was the successful candidate following the recent interviews.  He will take up his appointment on 1 June. In the meantime, your prayers are asked for him and his family and for the Steering Group as they seek to set up the necessary support and management groups for Lee.

Alpha 2010 We are planning to run another Alpha course at Cannon Lane beginning on Wednesday 15 September at 7.30 pm – 9.45 pm. This is a twelve week course with a half term break. Another course will be running on Thursday lunch times from 12.30 pm- 2.30 pm at Love Lane Methodist beginning on Thursday 9 September. The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore Christian faith in a relaxed and low key atmosphere beginning with a meal together.  Please think if you have friends, family or neighbours who may be interested or perhaps your own faith needs rekindling. There are some registration forms and invitations in the vestibule.  Registration forms need to be sent to Pinner Methodist Church Office, Love Lane, Pinner, tel 8868 0353 or email: pinnermethodistevents@hotmail.com .

PAC Songs of Praise in the Park – help needed

Helpers are needed as follows:

  • 2 from each Church in the PAC to help set up in the morning of Sunday 29 August;
  • 2 volunteers from each Church to help take down at approximately 4.30 pm;
  • Singers and musicians (rehearsals on Mondays 16 and 23 August, 8.00 pm, Pinner Free Church);
  • 2 suggestions for hymns/songs to be included in the programme

Autumn Bazaar  Saturday 9 October, 11.00 am to 2.00 pm. Please put this date in your diary. The organising team will contact possible volunteers shortly.

Prayer Handbook 2010/11   Every August, the Methodist Church produces a new prayer handbook.  This provides suggestions for prayer to support the World Church, as well as needs nearer home.  There is also a framework of daily Bible readings. This year’s edition is entitled “God’s Open Word”. Janet is placing an order for 15 copies for Cannon Lane. If you would like to receive a handbook this year, please let Janet know (expected cost £3).

Autumn Bulletin   During this holiday season, you might like to think whether there is something you could write or contribute towards the Harvest edition to be issued early in late September/early October. Avis will be happy to receive articles at any time.
