The Groups will come together for a closing service on Friday 14th March.  Application forms to join a group are now in the vestibule and need to be returned to Kathy Mathew or put in the box, which is marked for completed forms, also in the vestibule. Forms need to be in by January 20th in order to give the Planning Group time to sort applicants into groups. Please give this careful consideration and consider suspending housegroups for the period of Lent to give members the opportunity to take part.  Details of study material can be found on the application form.

Coffee Morning
Please support the coffee morning planned for Saturday 26th January in aid of The Leprosy Mission.  Further details nearer the time.

Alpha
Mike Hall writes:

We have just come to the end of a 15 session based Alpha Course. Pheeew!

For those that have been on the Course, it has been an intensive look at the basics of the Christian faith, and an exploration of its relevance to modern day living. There have been many difficult questions raised, some really interesting reflections by everyone attending and we didn’t lose any of those that originally signed up to do Alpha, which must be a national record. I’m sure that it is the good food, and warm welcome, and fascinating discussions that kept everyone hooked on coming each Wednesday evening.

For those who have been co-ordinating, helping to lead, and assisting ‘in the wings’, the Course has been tiring, but very fulfilling. I think that I speak on behalf of the whole team, in that it has been really exciting to see so much genuine interest in the questions (and some of the answers) that our faith poses in the context of contemporary society. We feel privileged to have shared this journey with such a brilliant group of people, and we have learned much too!

A special thanks goes to the co-ordinating group, Jenny, Nikki, Clive, Amanda, and Jean; the leaders of the group Katherine, Kathy, Pat, and Jenny.

So, What next? Well, most of the group want to continue with some sort of meeting in the New Year. We are currently looking at some suitable material and will be advertising it to everyone that has been on Alpha in due course. In addition, in January, we are having an Alpha Celebration Evening, as an opportunity to relax, enjoy some more food(!) and share with each other just a few of the highlights of the past 13 weeks.

My personal reflection is, well done Cannon Lane, for taking such a bold step. Who knows where and when the fruit from this course will come, but rest assured it will. One important aspect of Alpha is, that once momentum is achieved, it needs to be maintained in some way, either through follow up group work, or establishing a programme of Alpha during the year. So watch this space.

God bless you for being obedient to the command to share our faith, and keep praying for guidance as to the next step… the journey (I suspect) has only just begun.

Ecumenical Lent Groups 2008
Because Easter is early this year, applications should be in to join a Lent Group by next Sunday 20th January at the latest. The cost of enrolment is £3.00 which includes the study book.  The course title is “Who is my neighbour” and the following topics will be considered:

  • Recognition of God’s image in all people
  • Why do people migrate and move as refugees
  • My neighbour is someone in need
  • My neighbour is a person with gifts unique in the sight of God.  Actions speak louder than words
  • Multiculturalism

This looks interesting and stimulating and members from the churches in Pinner and Eastcote will be participating this year. The Lent Course will be launched at a special service on Sunday 10th February and the groups will start to meet from Monday 11th February. There are application forms in the vestibule and forms should be returned to Kathy Mathew or put in the box marked for completed forms also in the vestibule as soon as possible.

One World and Injustice.
Churches Together in Eastcote invite you to a Teatable conference on Sunday 20th January starting with a talk on the title subject at 3.30pm by Richard Baker followed by tea at 4.30pm and a service at 5pm.  St Andrews URC, Bridle Road.  All welcome.

Coffee Morning
Please support the coffee morning planned for Saturday 26th January in aid of The Leprosy Mission.  Further details nearer the time.

Quiz Night
Hayes Methodist Church is holding a Quiz Night on Saturday 26th January from 7.30pm to 9pm. Entrance fee is £5.50 per person, with discounts on family tickets, and will include fish and chips, prizes and fun!  Proceeds go towards the “Church Worship Area Project”.  For tickets or further information, please call Ajayi on 01895 539540 or George on 01895 813088.  Church address: Hayes End Methodist Church, Uxbridge Road, Hayes End, UB4 8JW.

New year - time to review your finances?
The weekly giving envelopes for regular givers are now available for the year from April 2008. There are spares if anyone would like to start giving in this way. Alternatively a number of members find it convenient (as do the stewards/treasurer!) to give by standing order.

For taxpayers who have not signed a Gift Aid declaration, this is a painless way to enhance your giving by enabling the Church to reclaim the tax. From April 2008 the basic rate of income tax will be 20% so we will be able to claim £20 for every £80 of giving (an extra 25%). For existing arrangements however the reduction in the income tax rate means that unless giving is increased the Church will suffer a reduction in the tax reclaim. For each £100 (net) given in 2007/08 we can claim £28.20 but from April this will drop to £25. Please would existing gift-aiders therefore consider increasing their giving where appropriate.

If anyone would like more details in relation to gift aid, gift aid forms, particulars of our bankers to set up a standing order, or envelopes please contact our treasurer, Nigel Rackham in person or at rackham60@tiscali.co.uk.

Church Walk  - Saturday 11th October
This was advertised early this year and now is the time to let us know if you would like to join a Church Walk to Kew Gardens on Saturday.  The current entrance costs to Kew Gardens are £13 per person, £12 concessions and children FREE.  However, the Church are going to subsidise the entry cost by 50%. If anyone wishes to join the group please let Marlene know this Sunday, 28th or ASAP and then the Social Committee can arrange the transport - either by tube or car depending on who is going.

Harvest Sunday - 12th October
A hot main meal lunch will be provided by the Church and therefore the Social Committee Chefs would like to know approximate numbers for catering.  Please can you let Marlene/Judy/Sue know by the 5th October please whether you are likely to be coming.  We are asking for donations of crumbles from those especially who have surplus apples.

Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child (run by Samaritan's Purse organisation) involves obtaining an empty shoebox and filling it with things suitable for a child of a particular age.  It would be good for Cannon Lane to get involved as part of the Hope 08 initiative.  If you feel you would like to bring hope to children living in poverty and would like more information, please contact Pat Griffiths.  Shoe boxes are collected in early November so we need to get started soon.

International Food Evening - Saturday 22nd November from 7pm
Please can you put this date in your diaries and have a think about an international dish that you would like to share with the rest of us.  Last year this event proved to be loads of fun with us all eating far too much, trying each others dishes and having a go at the table quizzes.  The Social Committee will provide drinks and the fun table quizzes - all the family are welcome.  This is an excellent social event with the sharing of fellowship and we look forward to seeing you all there.

THANK YOU to everyone who came along to support the World's Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Relief at the PAC Coffee Shop.  We broke our record of last year with 132 people signing in (128 last year), and we raised a total of £544.99  (£80+ more than last year).

Church Council
Our Church Council meeting will be held on Thursday 9th October at 8.00pm in the Sanctuary.

Church Walk  - Saturday 11th October
This was advertised early this year and now is the time to let us know if you would like to join a Church Walk to Kew Gardens on Saturday.  The current entrance costs to Kew Gardens are £13 per person, £12 concessions and children FREE.  However, the Church is going to subsidise the entry cost by 50%.

Favourite Hymn Singing
Favourite Hymn Singing will be held at 3.30 pm on Thursday 16th October in the Fellowship Room.  All welcome.

Shoeboxes are collected in early November so we need to get started soon.

International Food Evening - Saturday 22nd November from 7pm
Please can you put this date in your diaries and have a think about an international dish that you would like to share with the rest of us.  Last year this event proved to be loads of fun with us all eating far too much, trying each other’s dishes and having a go at the table quizzes.  The Social Committee will provide drinks and the fun table quizzes - all the family are welcome.  This is an excellent social event with the sharing of fellowship and we look forward to seeing you all there.

Flower Rota
Many thanks to all who have provided flowers for the Sancturary in 2008.   After services, the flowers are given to people who are feeling ill or low, or for other happier reasons.  The flower rota for 2009 is now on the notice board, and our January Covenant Service is only weeks away!  Please sign up to provide flowers if you feel able!  If you have any queries, please speak to Eileen Seargent.

Alpha Vision Day
The Alpha Vision Day will be on Saturday 28 February 2009 from 10.30am to 8pm at Holy Trinity Brompton.  Anyone interested in attending this day, please contact Mike.
